A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
