Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state early analysis indicate the liquid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.

An important official stated the incident made him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
