Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has stated how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the business with his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain how Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that was first established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
