Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 people perished and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
