In a significant military action, Kyiv's forces reportedly used long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil refinery. This strike was carried out Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military command.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit objectives on Russian soil.
Ukrainian officials noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant acts as one of the main suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is directly involved in providing for the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the War Front
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.
“It was a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it involves approaches, meetings, and, of course, the timeline.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a Russian court has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was given to six years in a penal colony.
The charges reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov shared backing another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in defiance.
Foreign Prisoner Case
The Kremlin has stated it is in contact with French authorities regarding the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.
An official stated that Russia has made an offer to France regarding Vinatier, and now “the ball is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all government services mobilised to provide consular support and push for his release at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its basement, is scheduled to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.
The theatre is due to reopen by the month's end with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the last 24 months.
