We are verifying images and video circulated this morning that show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the images were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
