On the eve of his sixth anniversary as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to winning major honors.

The Spanish coach was appointed on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win within months. Yet, that initial silverware stands as his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” the manager said when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors must occur in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced the day after his role was made public.

Present Challenges

Regardless of the availability issues and the high-stakes environment, Arteta feels the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that indicates the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “It represents a quality that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
