The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in a generation are being described as a "significant breakthrough" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the infection, according to scientists.

Recent Drugs Receive Clearance

Another new antibiotic, developed by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, was also approved in the same week. This medication, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was shown in trials to be effective against superbug versions of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

Based on data released by a prominent scientific publication, the new drug eradicated over nine in ten of cases of the STI. This puts it on an similar efficacy with the typical regimen, which uses a dual-drug approach. The study involved hundreds of volunteers from multiple nations including the United States, Thailand, South Africa, and European nations.
