Outrage Explodes as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from both sides of the partisan divide and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the late director as "tortured and struggling". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Police have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures

The response to Trump's post was swift and harsh.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly dared members in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another political figure.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
