The rugby star earned 20 international appearances for New Zealand before changing representation to Samoa.

Rugby league's authority has announced that athletes who sign with the “rebel” R360 league will be banned for 10 seasons.

The proposed competition, which plans to launch in 2026, is aiming to attract athletes from both codes with substantial agreements and a reduced game calendar.

Leading NRL athletes have allegedly been contacted by R360, which will include six or eight men's teams and four women's teams operating from key urban centers globally.

Representing Samoa the rugby star, who represents New Zealand Warriors in the league, has confirmed he has had talks with the breakaway league.

Papenhuyzen, Zac Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also believed to be thinking about signing R360.

A group of rugby union teams, among them Australia, recently declared a prohibition on R360 recruits appearing in test matches.

“We heard our clubs and we've acted decisively,” said the league's head the official.

“Unfortunately, there will always be organizations that attempt to hijack our code for economic benefit.

“They avoid funding in talent pipelines or the advancement of athletes. They merely capitalize on the dedication of existing bodies, jeopardizing careers of economic hardship while profiting themselves.

“In truth, they represent, imitating the sport.”

The league is co-founded by former England World Cup winner Mike Tindall and backed by private investors.

Following the potential union sanctions were revealed last week, it said: “We want to work in partnership as part of the international rugby schedule.

“The event is designed with customized calendars for men's and women's teams and R360 will allow all athletes for international matches, as included in their contracts.”

The new league will seek approval for its proposals from the international authority, rugby union's regulatory group, at its council meeting in 2026.
