As any significant prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
