The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now in development.
