The Lingering Emotional Toll After a Devastating Hurricane: A Trail of Psychological Wreckage Across Jamaica.

When Hurricane Melissa ravaged Jamaica on 28 October with winds of 185mph, it resulted in a picture of utter destruction. Residences, hospitals, and critical infrastructure were severely compromised, causing 32 fatalities and impacting an approximate 1.5 million people. For therapist Toni-Jan Ifill, it was instantly apparent that the tangible destruction would be shadowed by profound and enduring psychological scars.

“Everyday occurrences can trigger them,” Ifill states. “One woman described a cart we often roll through the passageways, whose noise reminded her of splintering trees and the fierce gales. She no longer wants to experiencing that auditory reminder.”

A month and a half after the catastrophe, which also impacted neighboring Cuba, memories of the frightening storm continue to trouble a number of staff at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. Even the sound of rain can now elicit panic among survivors.

The Hidden Toll Alongside Billions in Damage

Hurricane Melissa led to a substantial recovery package totaling $6.7 billion over several years and an additional payment of millions from a pioneering catastrophe bond. However, experts warn this monetary aid fails to account for the invisible cost: pervasive mental health crises—notably among those who had been recovering from a previous disaster in 2024.

While most attention targets physical reconstruction, studies over the recent years show that the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) increases substantially after hurricanes and forced relocation. Experts are now advocating for the incorporation of psychological care into climate-disaster policy across Caribbean nations.

Layered Struggles: Insecurity and Mental Health

Academics emphasize how prolonged homelessness, destroyed jobs, and insufficient support exacerbate emotional distress. A scholarly article warned of a heightened danger of severe mental health issues after extreme weather. Additional analysis found parallel anxiety, fear, and emotional distress among people who survived other hurricanes.

Dr. Eamin Heanoy, a academic who has examined disaster survivors in multiple countries, notes that survivors typically experience several key mental health challenges: severe stress and mood disorders.

Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, a scholar in disaster studies, concurs. She points out that while humans are generally resilient, as the planet continues to warm, mental health is becoming an major issue—despite the fact that detailed prevalence surveys is not widely available.

Both Smith and Heanoy found that women affected reported more severe emotional impact than men. “This suggests women are at greater emotional risk than males in such catastrophes,” Smith explains.

The Difficult Journey to Healing

Dr. Heanoy states that while some early progress in well-being is often seen within a year of the event, the ultimate prognosis can be unpredictable. The degree to which survivors recover depends heavily on the specific triggers and the resources accessible.

The experts see that the destruction of property and resources can intensify the psychological burden to recover. Smith calls housing loss “one of the primary stressors,” especially when financial safety nets are absent. “Reconstruction comes with its own mental burden,” she says.

Ifill witnesses the same pattern among her clients: “Individuals who had mental health conditions before have found it’s far more intense in this aftermath.”

In addition to the psychological damage, tangible issues remain. The hurricane destroyed vital water infrastructure, slowing the reliable supply of potable water. Insurance payouts, while helpful, cannot resolve the systemic weaknesses exposed by the storm.

Grassroots Cohesion as a Essential Pillar

Critically is that physical reconstruction by itself does not address the emotional wounds caused by life-altering injuries. Studies shows that survivors commonly experience community support to be more responsive than government assistance.

“The government’s role is important,” Smith acknowledges. “In its absence, or when it is delayed, neighbors support one another.”

Ifill similarly praises the power of community solidarity in overcoming challenges. She recalls being “moved by the resilient spirit” among resilient populations. “Your house is gone, right? But if a community has a supportive culture, they make jokes about the storm.”

Additionally, she acknowledges steps to support emotional well-being after the disaster but warns about the negative effects of consuming endless negative news. “I recommended curating news intake, following official updates, and using messaging apps to stay in touch with loved ones.”

An Increasing Regional Priority

Over the past decade, psychological support has garnered greater attention from world bodies due to the escalating climate crisis. The increasing frequency of extreme weather has led to the development of tools for trauma support.

Regional institutions have published comprehensive manuals to help aid personnel in delivering psychosocial support in the aftermath of disasters. These efforts aim to build individual and social resilience by building capacity, promoting openness, and encouraging the use of mental health services.

Financial support are also highlighted as fundamental for protecting mental health. A farmer from another Caribbean nation, who lost his livelihood in a similar event, stresses the despair that arises when promised compensation is not delivered. “They came... But even now, we never got the promised help,” he states.

A Plea for Comprehensive Rebuilding

Experts observe that the Caribbean region is responsible for a very small fraction of global emissions yet suffers disastrous climate impacts. A timely and comprehensive reconstruction is deemed vital to mitigate enduring trauma.
