While Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, noticed loud noises echoing through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Stepping out of her residence, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore told her trouble had occurred.

While standing on the road, speaking to a pair who had run up the hill soaked, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the path that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that large equipment and unshod … He’s running into something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous acts of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, law enforcement and ambulance crews treating many victims.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the community, with the patrol base next to the scene of the attack serving as a makeshift medical station. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as rushing into the water to assist people who were struggling.

After the attack, messages of appreciation were shared. A social media message expressed gratitude for the responders who showed that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The group of beach patrol issued a statement, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the care for our personnel,” the organization commented. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those affected.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the incident commenced through to late that evening.

“We have heard so many moving narratives, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous coastlines secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.

“During this time of sorrow and process the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such darkness.”
